Scoliosis Therapy

Scoliosis Therapy in Gurnee IL

We utilize a diverse mix of treatments to help manage scoliosis symptoms and make corrections when possible.

Scoliosis can be one of the most difficult musculoskeletal conditions to manage and the only available surgery for most patients is a radical spinal fusion. Fortunately, most scoliosis patients will not need surgery. However, it is our experience that people who have mild to moderate curvatures do not benefit from traditional generic chiropractic care or physical therapy.

This is due to the simple fact that most doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors do not have specific training in scoliosis management. Naturally, any healthcare provider may be able to identify scoliosis, but that is the easy part.

Successful therapies use very specific treatments which are generally not taught in school. We recommend verifying that any practitioner you are visiting for scoliosis has some type of post-graduate scoliosis training. Common examples are Schroth, SEAS, CLEAR, CBP, etc...

We treat childhood scoliosis cases very differently from adult scoliosis cases

There is a window of opportunity to correct or reduce progression of a curve in someone who is still growing. Ideally this treatment begins at ~13 years of age if the curvature is identified in time. Unfortunately, most curvatures are not identified until they are severe enough to be noticed easily. Due to this fact, a large portion of our scoliosis patients are past 18 years of age.

The intensity of our programs are directly proportional to the amount of correction which is possible. Therefore, we generally see children and young teens more frequently than adults.

A typical session of care for children will consist of exercise, stretching, manipulation, manual therapy, and traction. We may recommend additional corrective equipment such as a corrective scoliosis brace or a heel lift.

Adult care will be very similar, but we generally will focus more on pain management strategies and stretching strategies for typical patterns of muscular tightness which develop over time. We may suggest a night scoliosis brace for moderate curves which are slowly progressing.

CBP practitioners are essentially experts in using traction to correct the spine.

This part is boring, but important. Traction is a unique therapy that is distinct from other therapies like exercise, stretching, adjustments, heat, ice, etc... Traction is a sustained stretch applied to joints that are relaxed. It is intended to change the structure of ligaments, which hold the spine locked into a unique shape for each individual. Traction is sometimes used in surgery for a completely different purpose, and it is also sometimes used by Physical Therapists and other therapists to "decompress" injured discs. The type of traction used by CBP practitioners is very different from either of these types of traction.

CBP traction involves bending, and it sometimes utilizes combinations of different pulls to change the shape of the spine. General chiropractors, physical therapists, and medical doctors are unfamiliar with these techniques and do not offer them as treatments. This is why CBP practitioners get substantially different (and better) results.

Why use CBP?

CBP is all about creating long term relief. Chiropractic can do so much more than short term pain relief. The technique combines traction with the chiropractic adjustment, specific exercises and focused stretching. These therapies are made just for you, based off of the unique shape of your spine.

The combination of traction, exercise, and adjustments produces measurable changes to the shape of your spine. These changes last, and allow the spine to fully heal. CBP is the only technique proven to do this consistently in peer-reviewed research.

Dr. Ryan Winslow holds an advanced certification in the Chiropractic BioPhysics technique. CBP inspired him as a student to pursue research, and he graduated with Research Honors. His office is fully equipped to to deliver the best the technique has to offer.

Call or email our office to learn if you may be a candidate for this technique. This technique has successfully treated complicated cases like low back pain with radiculopathy, and neck pain with migraine headaches. At the date of writing this, Dr. Ryan Winslow is the only Advanced CBP certified practitioner in Gurnee and the surrounding area.
